Implementation of these projects depends on such factors as clarity of information among stakeholders, legal security of territories, and local decision-making power. These challenges have been previously identified in the Upper Bayano watershed of eastern Panama, where a long history of land cover and land-use conflicts is present between three different human groups. With a long-term objective of natural forest conservation, this study aims to develop and test participatory approaches (participatory mapping and participatory 3D modelling) for the Upper Bayano watershed in an attempt to create a consensus among all stakeholders on current land cover and land-use conflicts to overcome challenges faced by projects as REDD+. We found that the third dimension allows a common understanding over the landscape, creates a common ground discussion, and leads towards a consensus, while the participatory approach brings discussion and positive effects among the stakeholders and the bridging institutions bring equity and transparency. Finally, we discuss implications of this knowledge generation and common agreement over the landscape for future forest management projects such as REDD+’s implementation. } } @article {, author = {Arthur J}, author = {Carlson C}, author = {Moore L}, title = {A practical guide to consensus: policy consensus initiative (abbreviated version)}, journal = {The Policy Consensus Initiative}, volume = {}, pages = {11}, year = {1999} } @article {, author = {Berkes F}, title = {Evolution of co-management: role of knowledge generation, bridging organizations and social learning}, journal = {Journal of Environmental Management}, volume = {90}, pages = {1692}, year = {2009} } @article {, author = {Davis SH}, author = {Wali A}, title = {Indigenous land tenure and tropical forest management in Latin America}, journal = {Ambio}, volume = {23}, pages = {485}, year = {1994} } @article {, author = {Foody GM}, author = {Palubinskas G}, author = {Lucas RM}, author = {Curran PJ}, author = {Honzak M}, title = {Identifying terrestrial carbon sinks: classification of successional stages in regenerating tropical forest from Landsat TM data}, journal = {Remote Sensing of Environment}, volume = {55}, pages = {205}, year = {1996} } @article {, author = {Gaillard J-C}, author = {Maceda EA}, title = {Participatory three-dimensional mapping for disaster risk reduction, participatory learning and action: community-based adaptation to climate change}, journal = {Participatory Learning and Action}, volume = {60}, pages = {109}, year = {2009} } @article {, author = {Galudra G}, author = {Van Noordwijk M}, author = {Suyanto S}, author = {Sardi I}, author = {Pradhan U}, author = {Catacutan D}, title = {Hot spots of confusion: contested policies and competing carbon claims in the peatlands of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia}, journal = {International Forestry Review}, volume = {13}, pages = {431}, year = {2011} } @article {, author = {Holmes I}, author = {Potvin C}, title = {Avoiding re-inventing the wheel in a people-centered approach to REDD+}, journal = {Conservation Biology}, volume = {28}, pages = {1380}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Houghton RA}, author = {House J}, author = {Pongratz J}, author = {Van der Werf G}, author = {DeFries R}, author = {Hansen M}, title = {Carbon emissions from land use and land-cover change}, journal = {Biogeosciences}, volume = {9}, pages = {5125}, year = {2012} } @article {, author = {Innes JE}, author = {Booher DE}, title = {Consensus building and complex adaptive systems: a framework for evaluating collaborative planning}, journal = {Journal of the American Planning Association}, volume = {65}, pages = {412}, year = {1999} } @article {, author = {Karsenty A}, author = {Ongolo S}, title = {Can “fragile states” decide to reduce their deforestation?
