Open access is the practice of providing free and unrestricted online access to the products of research.
Open access advocates for the immediate and unrestricted online access to published, peer-reviewed research. Open access research is made available for free in perpetuity and includes guidelines and/or licenses that communicate how readers can share and re-use the content.
Read our Quick Guide to Open Access for Researchers for more general information on open access publishing.
FACETS is an open access journal.
FACETS provides free public access to the final peer reviewed published article.
Access is immediate and permanent.
There are many reasons to publish in an open access journal, ranging from personal preference, to the need to adhere to institutional or funding mandates, to larger philosophical reasons. At FACETS, we launched a multidisciplinary open access journal to provide authors who choose open access with a trusted, high-quality, and affordable open access publishing channel.
We want to help shape the outcome of open access publishing in Canada by ensuring Canadian open access is synonymous with quality.
Each author has their own reasons for publishing as open access. Here are some of the benefits of open access to consider when you’re making that decision.
Open access articles have the potential to reach a larger audience. A wider reach means better potential for generating greater awareness about your work and career.
Many funding agencies require funded research to be published as open access. Publishing in an open access journal removes the need to manage different embargo times and ensuring that various open access models adhere to your funder’s requirements.
With traditional subscription journals, only individuals with personal or institutional access can read your research. This creates inequalities in access.
Open access is a step toward shifting the focus from Impact Factor to impact. Research has the potential to impact individuals, policy makers and other scientists. Open access ensures that everyone and anyone who is interested in your research can read it, use it, and share it.
The emergence of open access has changed the scholarly publishing landscape, making research more broadly accessible to academic and non-academic audiences alike. Our goal is to respond, swiftly and systematically, to the needs of our authors and researchers. We believe that open access is about choice; with FACETS, researchers choose open access, choose rigorous peer review and choose quality.
Many funding agencies around the world now require that funded peer-reviewed journal articles are made available as open access. Canadian funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) have recently adopted a new policy, the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications that “requires federally funded peer-reviewed journal publications to be made freely available within 12 months of publication...”
FACETS is fully compliant with the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications as well as most open access policies worldwide.
All content published in FACETS is governed by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). under "User License At-a-Glance".

At FACETS we believe that rigorous peer review is an essential element to the success of open access scholarly publishing. When scientific research is freely available, it is vital that all readers, including scientists, policy makers and the public, know and trust that the research has been vetted through peer review.
